In October 2023, I came across a quirky half-frame snapshot camera for 35mm film. I was looking for a simple camera to carry with me at all times, a camera I could use as a visual notebook to capture everyday observations. It was an instant match.

The final prints, with their rounded edges, coincidentally remind me of a Moleskine notebook on a flatbed scanner. While working with the negatives, I was confronted with the fact that both my film scanner and the darkroom enlarger use a standard mask for full frame. As a result, two images always appeared together, naturally forming diptychs. Rather than dismiss this unexpected quality, I choose to embrace it and work with it.

The paired frames reveal the edit made in-camera and carry a cinematographic quality, revealing sequence, narrative and chance as you move from one scene to the next.

All prints were made in the color darkroom of SPEC in Utrecht, NL.
